Every future driver knows that a car needs to be fueled with the right type of fuel. But have you ever wondered how black crude oil turns into the gasoline we pump at the station? It's all about a process called fractional distillation. Oil is heated to extreme temperatures in special towers. Since different components boil at different temperatures, they separate into "floors": * The lightest vapors rise to the top and turn into gasoline. * Aviation kerosene collects just below. * Even lower down, heavier and more viscous diesel fuel settles.
